Glass Replacement

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does it cost to replace window glass in Canberra?

The cost of replacing a standard house window depends on:

    • Size and style of the window
    • Type of glass selected
    • Number of windows being replaced
    • Customisation requirements
    • Labour time, including removing the broken glass and fitting the new pane

Glass type usually makes the biggest difference. Standard float glass is the most affordable option. Toughened and double-glazed glass costs more because it's made to order, and laminated glass costs more than float because of its bonded, multi-layer construction. Toughened glass, for example, can't be cut after it's toughened, so it has to be manufactured to the exact size of your window. Larger panes and windows that are hard to reach also take longer to install.

If you have several windows that need attention, having them done in one visit usually lowers the labour cost per window, giving you better value.

We will start by measuring your windows and then provide a free quote based on your needs. Call 0409 070 224 or request your free quote today.

  • Is it cheaper to replace the glass or the whole window?

If your window is old, single-paned, draughty, or has a damaged frame, replacing the entire window may be the most cost-effective long-term solution.

However, if the frame is still in good condition and the damage is minimal, replacing only the glass can save money without compromising quality.

For most broken or cracked panes, glass-only replacement is the cheaper option because your existing frame, hardware and seals stay in place. A new pane can also extend the life of a window that's otherwise in good shape.

Our team can assess your windows and recommend the best solution.

  • How long does window glass replacement take?

Most standard jobs are quick. We offer fast turnaround on simple single-pane windows in clear float glass, which can often be replaced on the same day or the next business day, depending on our workload and the glass we have in stock. If it's an emergency glass repair, such as a broken window after a break-in or storm, let us know when you call so we can prioritise your job.

Toughened glass and double-glazed units are made to order, so these usually take around 3 to 5 business days from measure-up to installation. We'll give you a clear timeframe when we quote and advise you on keeping the area safe in the meantime.

  • What's involved in replacing a broken window?

As with all our glass repairs, our glaziers take care of the whole job, not just the new glass. A typical residential window glass replacement includes:

    • Safely removing the broken or cracked pane and any loose pieces from the frame
    • Cleaning up broken glass from the work area
    • Measuring and supplying the correct glass for that location, compliant with AS 1288
    • Fitting and sealing the new glass into your existing frame using the highest quality materials
    • Cleaning the finished window before we leave
    • Excellent service doesn't end when the glass goes in, so we always leave your home the way we found it.
  • Do I need safety glass in my window?

It depends on where the window is. Australian Standard AS 1288 requires safety glass in human impact zones, which are areas where someone could accidentally walk into or fall against the glass. These include:

    • Glass doors and sliding doors
    • Glass side panels next to doors
    • Windows that sit close to the floor
    • Bathrooms, including shower screens and windows near baths

Safety glass is either toughened or laminated. Toughened glass breaks into small granules that are far less likely to cause serious injury than sharp shards. Laminated glass holds together when broken because two panes are bonded together with a tough plastic layer between them. All the shower screens we install use toughened safety glass.

Many older Canberra homes have ordinary glass in these locations. When we replace a pane in one of these areas, we fit glass that meets the current standard, even if the original didn't, and our glaziers have the knowledge to tell you if safety glass is required before we quote.

  • Can you replace one pane of a double-glazed window?

In most cases, no. A double-glazed window is made up of two panes sealed together as a single unit, with a spacer and an insulating gap between them. If one pane cracks, the whole sealed unit needs to be replaced to restore its insulation and keep moisture out. A new unit brings back the insulating double-glazed glass Canberra homes rely on through cold winters.

The good news is that your frame can usually stay. We measure the existing unit, have a new one made to size, and fit it into your current frame.

The same applies if you notice fogging or condensation between the panes. That means the seal has failed, and replacing the unit is the only reliable fix.

  • Can you install a dog door when you replace my glass?

Yes. If you're a pet owner, replacing a broken or old pane is a great time to add a cat or dog door. A dog door can't be cut into existing glass, so we replace the glass panel with a new toughened panel that has the opening made to size, then fit the pet door. This works for sliding doors, hinged glass doors and fixed panels.

  • Can you match the existing glass in my home?

Yes, in most cases. We can match clear, tinted, frosted, obscure and many patterned glass types, including the frosted glass often used in bathroom windows and shower screens, as well as the thickness of your existing glass.

Some older decorative and patterned glass is no longer manufactured. If an exact match isn't available, we'll show you the closest options. Where panes sit side by side, you may also choose to replace both so they match for a lovely, consistent finish.

To help us quote accurately, send us a photo of the window or keep a piece of the broken glass for us to look at.

  • What should I do if a window breaks after hours?

Our team works Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. For emergency glass repair during business hours, call us directly on 0409 070 224. If you're dealing with emergency glass damage outside these hours, you can make it safe until we can get to you:

    • Keep children and pets away from the area
    • Don't pick up broken glass with bare hands. Wear thick gloves and closed shoes, and sweep up small pieces carefully.
    • Run strong tape across cracked glass to stop it falling out
    • Cover the opening with heavy plastic, cardboard or plywood taped or fixed to the frame
    • For break-ins, contact the police. For storm damage, contact the ACT SES on 132 500 if you need urgent help. The SES can make temporary repairs, and we can take care of the permanent glass replacement.
    • Take photos of the damage for your insurance claim

Then call us or send photos through our contact form, and we'll get back to you on the next business morning. If it's an insurance job, we can also manage the claim process for you.

  • Do you replace window frames?

We specialise in replacing the glass within your existing frames, including single panes and double-glazed units. If your frame itself is badly damaged, we'll let you know when we assess the window and can recommend a window supplier for a full frame replacement.

  • Can I replace my windows?

While it's possible to replace windows yourself, especially if you have experience, it's usually not the most practical or safe option. Window replacement requires precision, time, and expertise to ensure a proper fit, secure installation, and long-lasting results.

It's also a compliance issue. Glass installed in Australian homes and buildings must meet Australian Standard AS 1288. Windows in human impact zones often require safety glass (see "Do I need safety glass in my window?" above). A qualified glazier will identify the correct glass for each location so your replacement is both safe and compliant.

Accidental damage during DIY installation can also lead to higher repair costs. For peace of mind, relying on professional glass replacement services like Capital Glass ACT is best.

  • Can you supply glass for renovations?

Yes. Alongside window glass replacement, our glazing services cover a wide range of glass products for home renovations and commercial fit-outs, including:

    • Frameless and semi-frameless shower screens
    • Custom size mirrors for bathrooms and wardrobes
    • Glass splashbacks for kitchens and laundries
    • Glass tabletops and shelves with polished edges
    • Office partitions and shopfronts

Whether you're planning a bathroom update or managing a larger project, we'll measure on site and supply glass cut to your exact sizes. Well-placed mirrors and glass can also make a small space feel brighter and more open.
